We often think about astrology as useful for helping us to understand our personal life - our goals, challenges, and the roles we play. But astrology can be very helpful in understanding family dynamics.
Families often show the same patterns in generation after generation - the same issues come up, the same roles are played by different people. There's "The Golden Child," "The Rebel," and "The Black Sheep." We hear that "Our family is not like that" or that "We've always been like this." Although many of us feel that our families are just one part of our lives, the truth is that we grow up within the assumptions and beliefs of our families. Whether we accept these ideas or reject them, whether we cling to or move away from our families, they are part of who we are. They are the background that we often need to illuminate in order to understand the foreground issues of our lives.
We've heard of "family curses," and sometimes it does seem like families are fated to live out the same patterns in every generation. There may be secrets and hidden histories that have been forgotten but are still operating on an emotional level. Often someone will come along who upsets the balance of the family, exposing the otherwise hidden truth. These people are often regarded as Black Sheep, yet they frequently become the Family Savior.
We can explore the astrology of your family at any level. For example, we can examine the charts in a nuclear or extended family. We can look at the places the family members have lived, and the experiences they have had. And you can learn what your role is in the family dynamic. We each have our individual karmic energy to work out and work with, but we also have our family karma.
